Leaf Square
SawWorks Studio, Birmingham, AL 2004
mixed media / variable dimensions
The interior installation consisted of a steel table with a new wooden top raised 40″ from the floor. On the 24’x4′ table top I assembled specimens collected from the 50 acres of woods around my house. The artifacts, Organdy Digital photos of the specimens were attached to the table top. Suspended over the table was a floating ceiling of pine needles. At 6′ it was just above my head. Shadow patterns from the floating ceiling and specimens crawled across the table. To the left of the table hung a single leaf line collected from the dying trees in the courtyard. In the center of the courtyard I assembled a 10’x10′ leaf square, planting piano wire into the earth at 1′ intervals. With the continuous movement of the sun, the shadow patterns crawled across the courtyard – everything in constant motion with the wind.
